The devices used by the hearing impaired people to enhance the level of their hearing are called hearing impaired devices.

Hearing aids are instruments that bring sound waves more efficiently to the ears of the listener, thereby assisting hard-of-hearing people pick up sounds better.

Former gadgets were supine and sought to collect auditory sensation and channelize it onto the ear. A funnel-like elaboration cone called "ear trumpet" or an "ear horn" was among the first of these devices. But now the times have changed.

Body Worn Aid consists of a box that contain amplifying devices connected to a cord. They are huge and not very handy to use.

Behind The Ear Aids is the next type or hearing aids. A tiny plastic case is usually fitted behind the ear. It conducts sound through the air with the help of a small tube. They are useful for people with mild hearing loss to profound hearing loss and are smaller and better tools as compared to the Body Worn Aids.

The third type is In the Ear Aid. They are usually put inside the ear pinna bowl and are only sometimes visible to others. They are made to the size of the individual. These are also useful to those with mild to severe deafness. The next is the Receiver in the ear type. Here, the receiver is pushed into the ear canal, connected with a wire to the amplifier. This is even smaller and better.

The next is the canal and the mini canal aids. They are very small in size. But they cannot be used if the patient has good reception quality for low frequency sounds. Next is BAHA, one of the most advanced forms of hearing aid which is implanted inside the skull surgically.
