The Types Of Hearing Loss

Any kind of disability to hear clearly and properly is called hearing loss.

This hearing damage may even result in to total deafness like nerve deafness norm. In most cases of hearing loss, noise is one main cause. Such people who are partially or completely deaf need hearing assistance. The various types of hearing loss are discussed below.

Sensorineural hearing loss or nerve deafness is a case of deafness in which the main cause is the Cranial nerve VIII, inner ear, or the central processing centers in the brain. Sensorineural hearing loss may be mild, moderate or severe and may even result in to total deafness.

The great bulk of sensorineural hearing loss in humans is induced by abnormal conditions in hair cells in the cochlea. There are also various sensorineural hearing impairments which affect the VIIIth cranial nerve or the hearing parts of the brain. However, the quality of sound detected is poor and speech cannot be interpreted.

Hair cells might be abnormal from birth, or injured during lifetime. There are extraneous causes (like infection and noise trauma) and internal abnormalities such as deafness genes. Sensorineural hearing loss can also be caused due to abnormalities in the VIII cranial nerve. Sensory hearing loss which ensues from defects of the central auditory system of the brain is named as Central Hearing Disorder. As the auditory pathways move to and fro on both positions of the brain, central cause of total deafness is unusual.

The next kind of hearing loss is called Conductive Hearing Loss. When the ear fails to conduct sound waves efficiently through the tympanic membrane (eardrum), outer ear, or the middle ears (ossicles), it may result in what we call conductive hearing loss. This type of abnormality can happen alone or even together with sensory hearing loss.

Some main causes of this are: ottitis extema, cerumen(earwax), congenital atresia, tumor in the canal, exostosis, presence of foreign particles in the canal, perforation of tympanic membrane, tumor of the middle ear, Otosclerosis, Cholestitoma, acute and serious Otitis media and alike.

The last kind of hearing loss is Mixed Hearing Loss. In this case, features of both the sensory hearing loss as well as conductive hearing loss are visible. Though there are other ways of classifying types of hearing loss, this configuration is the most widely used. Most cases of hearing loss can be treated with the help of hearing aids available in a wide variety of features.
