Sudden Hearing Loss - The Causes And The Treatment

In the United States, about 4,000 individuals are affected by sudden hearing loss each year. There are various reasons that are responsible for this. You should be treated as soon as sudden hearing loss occurs.

Hearing loss is of three types, namely conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss or nerve deafness, and mixed hearing loss. Nerve deafness norm is the threshold at which the sensorineural nerve cannot transmit sound-related pulses, due to which significant hearing loss results

Sensorineural hearing loss may occur, if there is any problem in the inner part of the ear. A projection hearing loss calculator helps forecast a hearing-impaired personĀ's hearing loss after a certain number of years, based on the results of an audiogram of that person taken now.

Sudden hearing loss may be caused by a virus, Meniere's disease, a tiny blood clot in the inner ear, or a tumor growing on the auditory nerve. For hearing loss noise is a cause.

An Otolarynologist or ENT specialist aids nerve transmission of sound-related pulses by prescribing a treatment for sudden hearing loss.

Most commonly, individuals, who suffer from sudden deafness, are given high doses of steroids. For the first two weeks, the patient is treated with Prednisone steroid. After this, the patient is given a tapering dose. But this treatment cannot be used to cure all the patients. The reason is that individuals who suffer from diabetes, hypertension, or ulcers cannot bear the intake of steroids in a large amount.

But they need not be disappointed, as there is another treatment option as well called the MicroWick. The MicroWick or micro catheter also treats through use of a steroid, but the advantage here is that the steroid is delivered to the inner part of the affected ear.

It goes directly where it is needed and does not travel throughout the body of the patient. This eliminates the need of taking the steroid orally. In addition to this, the steroid here can be given in higher amounts as it reaches only the affected part of the body. Therefore, it can treat the patient more effectively.

Let us see how this procedure is carried on. First of all, the MicroWick is placed in through the eardrum. It is a simple process which takes around twenty to thirty minutes in all. It is placed after the ear is anesthetized with a local anesthetic, named xylocaine

An opening is made through use of a laser in the eardrum. In case there are adhesions on the round window, they have to be removed with a small instrument.

Then the MicroWick is inserted through the eardrum which rests with the help of the round window. Then Dexamethasone drops are placed on the MicroWick and a small amount is injected in the middle ear through the eardrum. This combination does not show such good results in treating patients who have suffered from this problem for several months.

Studies show that patient,s who suffer from sudden hearing loss, will have the best chances of successful treatment if they seek it during the early stage of the disease.
